Utopia Log 4: Boaventura De Sousa Santos: 'The Rise of the Global Left - the world social forum and beyond'. Chapter 1: 'The World Social Forum as critical utopia'.

4.5.2016
In preparation of our project in Porto Alegre, Brazil, I have started reading about the World Social Forums and have come across a book by Boaventura De Sousa Santos: 'The Rise of the Global Left - the world social forum and beyond'. Already the first chapter, which is short and precise, might be interesting to discuss as a kind of foundation for our project. Santos describes how the World Social Forum have established and opened up the possibility for other utopias than the mono-utopia of capitalism. It is not so much the development of actual utopian ideas as the basic and fundamental possibility of other, alternative political utopias that is at stake.

I thought that this might be a starting point for our research: Can we develop a project that plays with this idea of multiple possible utopias? How can we envision these possible utopias? Can we create an installation/performance/event/film/anything that serves as a platform for these multiple utopias?

Travelling to Brazil right now in the mids of what seems like a giant political crisis, gives us another acute context to our project: How can we insert the idea of possible utopias into the current political turmoil in Brazil? Can we use our project as a place to discuss the current Brazil crisis 'as seen from the position of multiple utopias'?
